Situation in Gaza has rapidly deteriorated, with a dire humanitarian crisis already by October 24, 2024. Armed groups launched attacks from Gaza into Israel on 7th October 2023, which Israel replied to, conducting an extensive military operation consisting of heavy bombardment and ground operations across Gaza. As such, the infrastructure of the region is in tatters, and over 41,000 casualties were reported so far

Perhaps the most profound part of this crisis is the dire humanitarian situation: more than 90 percent of Gaza’s population is now suffering from acute food insecurity, with food aid barely reaching those in need because of the restrictions and safety concerns.
Displacement is widespread, with Israeli orders for civilians to relocate to southern Gaza, but very little has been done to provide for them there. And after 17 years, the blockade on Gaza continues to make it difficult to get sufficient amounts of food, water, and medical supplies in.

There are growing international demands for a humanitarian ceasefire. The General Assembly of the United Nations, coupled with calls from various countries, demanded an immediate ceasefire to allow access by humanitarian missions to civilians and to protect all non-combatants. But consensus on a ceasefire has been elusive, with key international players holding different views. Israel says it is worried a ceasefire could play into the hands of armed groups such as Hamas, and it has denied any wrongdoing, invoking its right to self-defense.

The conflict has overspilled into the wider world beyond Gaza itself, raising tensions in bordering countries such as Lebanon and Syria, where regional dynamics and historic tensions play into the situation. There are fears it could spill over and further destabilize the wider region.
