Geoffrey Ruku Declares Net Worth of Ksh377 Million During Cabinet Vetting
On Monday, April 14, 2025, Geoffrey Ruku, the nominee for Cabinet Secretary of Public Service, Human Capital Development, and Special Projects, disclosed a net worth of Ksh377 million during his appearance before the National Assembly Committee on Appointments. Ruku, who currently serves as the Member of Parliament for Mbeere North, detailed his assets as follows:
Land and buildings valued at Ksh40 million
A family residence worth Ksh60 million
Sacco savings totaling Ksh15 million
Shares in a private company estimated at Ksh250 million
Motor vehicles valued at Ksh12 million
Ruku emphasized that his wealth has been accumulated through legitimate means over the years.
During the vetting, Ruku faced scrutiny over his limited experience in public service, having served only two years as an MP. He was also questioned about controversial bills he sponsored, including the Assembly and Demonstrations Bill 2024, which critics argue could infringe on the right to protest, and amendments to the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Act, which some fear might weaken anti-corruption efforts.
In response, Ruku defended his legislative initiatives, stating that the demonstrations bill aimed to ensure public order and safety during protests, and that his proposed amendments sought to streamline the procurement process, not to undermine anti-corruption measures.
Additionally, Ruku addressed allegations of defaulting on rent and utility payments, asserting that these claims are unfounded and currently under legal review. He assured the committee of his commitment to integrity and transparency in public service.
Ruku’s nomination comes as he is poised to replace former Attorney General Justin Muturi, who was dismissed from the cabinet following disagreements with President William Ruto over issues related to abductions and extrajudicial killings.
