Community Health Workers in Kenya Push for Fair Compensation and Recognition.

Community health workers (CHWs) in Kenya are raising their voices to demand better compensation and recognition for their critical contributions to the healthcare system. These dedicated individuals serve as the frontline of healthcare, providing essential services such as health education, basic treatment, and referrals in underserved communities. Despite their indispensable role, many CHWs continue to face financial challenges due to inadequate or nonexistent pay. In recent years, there have been modest improvements, including the provision of medical kits and a small stipend of approximately $35 per month.

However, CHWs argue that this is far from sufficient to support their families or reflect the value of their work. Millicent Miruka, a CHW, is among those advocating for change. She highlights the need to professionalize the role of CHWs, ensuring they receive fair remuneration and recognition for their impact on public health. “We are the backbone of healthcare in many communities, yet we are overlooked when it comes to compensation,” she said. Efforts are underway to address these concerns, with health organizations and policymakers acknowledging the need for better support for CHWs.

Advocates argue that improving compensation will not only motivate CHWs but also enhance the quality of care provided to vulnerable populations. As Kenya continues to grapple with healthcare challenges, the call to prioritize community health workers remains urgent. Their dedication deserves more than gratitude
